Playtonic Games and Team 17 have revealed that there will more to Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair than first meets the eye. In their latest trailer, the team showcases how players will be able to transform various levels into an alternate state, offering even more content for players to dive into.
It turns out that Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair won’t be just your average 2.5D platformer. As in addition to the previously announced 3D overworld and it’s puzzle-packed stages, each level will also feature a second state that bumps the final level count up 40! It won’t be plain-sailing though, as each alternate state only appears to be unlocked once Yooka and Laylee solve a state-changing overworld puzzle.
The alternate levels showcased in the trailer range from flooding factories and to freezing over previously water-filled worlds. According to Playtonic Games, some levels can even be flipped upside down to provide players with a fresh and radically different challenge to overcome.
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair was first announced on June 7th 2019 and is set to mix up the formula from the previous open-world platformer. The second title (Impossible Lair), will instead focus on 2.5D platforming accompanied by a lush 3D overworld packed with secrets to uncover.
Set to launch for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair will be available at some point in 2019. Unlike the first title, Impossible Lair will be available both digitally and as a full physical retail release on Switch. Pricing for the eShop version is yet to be announced, however, physical pre-orders are currently available on Amazon for around $39.99 / £29.99.
