Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that an open beta for cross-platform play is now available on the PlayStation 4. Starting today, PS4 players will be able to play Fortnite online with Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, smartphone and PC users!

Although Nintendo and Microsoft have already established a relationship in which cross-play between their respective consoles was supported in Fortnite, Sony had previously decided not to be involved. However, after what Sony describes as a “comprehensive evaluation process” it seems as though the last barrier to true cross-platform play may have finally been torn down.

Posted on the PlayStation blog by John Kodera (SIE’s Global CEO), the announcement stated that cross-play was a “major policy change” made in recognition of the value cross-platform experiences provide to players. The open beta for Fortnite marks the first step in this change and would be used to thoroughly test cross-platform play on PlayStation.

Sony are currently in the “planning process” of supporting the new cross-platform policy and have stated that they will have more information to share going forwards.
