According to recently released NPD data for the United States, the Nintendo Switch is now officially the fastest selling console this generation. Since March 2017, over 8.7 million Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold in the US alone.
The news also included the one of the first insights into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s US launch figures. The game managed to become the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game in the US, shifting 3 million units in it’s first 11 days on the market. That’s not all though, as the Switch release is also the fastest selling title in the Super Smash Bros. series too!
Whilst the NPD data only covers US sales, it’s clear that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a worldwide success. The crossover fighting game topped Media Create sales charts in Japan last week with 1.2 million copies sold in 3 days and also debuted at the #1 spot in the UK game charts.
Thanks to the success of the Nintendo Switch and its games, Nintendo is now the top-selling US publisher of 2018 (as of November). A trend that will most likely continue through to the end of 2018, with the success of recent releases.
Updated US sales figures for other Nintendo published games were also included in the announcement. Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu! and Let’s Go Eevee! have sold a combined 2 million units and Super Mario Party has sold 1.4 million units. Last year’s big Switch releases have also hit new sales milestones, with The Legend of Breath of the Wild selling over 4 million copies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling over 5 million copies and Super Mario Odyssey reaching 4.7 million copies sold as of November 2018.
Overall, there’s a lot of good news for Nintendo of America to brag about going into the new year. However, it’s still yet to be seen whether Nintendo will reach its worldwide target of 38 million Switch consoles sold by March 2019.
