Nintendo Switch 6.0.0 firmware update uncovered on Nintendo’s servers

Includes Switch Online preparations, new icons and keyboard support.
Nintendo Switch Update 6.0.0

Nintendo seems to be preparing the release of the Nintendo Switch’s next major firmware version and appears to have uploaded the 6.0.0 update to their servers a tad early.

Members of the ReSwitched hacker group discovered the update and have been able to uncover some tidbits through data mining and installing the firmware on a jailbroken Switch.

The update appears to be in preparation for Nintendo’s upcoming online service set for launch in September. Multiple references to save-data backups and “Nintendo Switch Online Membership” have been found in the update including the slogan “More Games. More Features. More Fun”.

Digging deeper, it seems like Nintendo might also be adding support for some as-yet-unreleased controllers. Icons for NES and Famicom controllers were found in the update as well as an unfamiliar controller that resembles a rounded Joy-Con with a D-pad.

Four new player icons from the Captain Toad game may also be making their way to the console in the 6.0.0 update. Additionally, a new option for USB keyboards was found in the system settings and a Joy-Con update also appears to be included.

It’s not yet known whether the rumoured in-console messaging system is a part of this update as no mention of it has been discovered. However, as the Nintendo Switch Online service is not live yet, the full feature-set is unknown.

With the update already being live on the servers and the online service just around the corner, it seems like it could be a matter of days before the 6.0.0 update drops. In the meantime, we’ll be keeping an eye out for an official announcement and release notes from Nintendo.
