New Gigantamax forms of fan-favourite Pokémon revealed

Big news, bigger Pokémon.

A brand new trailer for Pokémon Sword & Shield was revealed today, focusing on Gigantamax Pokémon. 5 new Gigantamax forms were revealed, including some exclusive to owners of previous Pokémon games.

Gigantamax is a new gameplay mechanic that will be introduced with Pokémon Sword and Shield. When activated, Pokémon that can Gigantamax turn in to towering new forms that make them even more formidable than before. These Pokémon have increased stats and powerful unique moves, though you can only activate Gigantamax once per battle.

New Gigantamax forms were announced today for fan favourite Generation 1 Pokémon Charizard, Pikachu, Eevee, Meowth, and Butterfree. Whilst Butterfree and Charizard take on more fearsome looks with their exaggerated features, Pikachu and Meowth are instead more humorous in design.

However, players can’t expect to find every one of the new Gigantamax Pokémon in their copy of the game. Only players with save data for 2018’s Pokémon Lets Go Pikachu or Lets Go Eevee on their Switch will be able to get the respective Pokémon with the Gigantamax ability. Similarly, the only way to bag yourself a Gigantamax Meowth is to buy a copy of Pokémon Sword or Shield before January 15th 2020 and claim it in-game, otherwise, you’ll end up missing out.

Alcremie, Drednaw, and Corviknight’s Gigantamax forms were previously announced back in July, so it’s not just Generation 1 Pokémon that will get the kaiju treatment. Be sure to check out the new trailer below to see how these new forms look and behave and check out the full roster in Pokémon Sword and Shield when they release on the 15th of November, 2019.
